On Covid-19 Travel Bans and Existential Threats

Regie Hamm observes how, after years of listening to certain people demand open borders and protest if anyone from anywhere was detained or turned away or sent back to their country of origin, for any valid reason – the same people have become movement deniers in the face of the threat of spreading Covid-19.

Covid 19 is allowing all the closeted fear of the open-minded to finally surface… it’s showing us exactly how we will respond in the face of a direct threat. We don’t have to even speculate, anymore. And it’s also showing us which tightly held ideals we will sell out at a moment’s notice, given the right circumstances; the right existential threat.

At the end of all this, those who survive will have an actual accounting of how everyone else acted during it. Who got gripped by fear? Who kept their cool? Who kept their sense of wonder? Who kept their sense of humor? Who helped? Who didn’t?

  1. I will be taking a risk to fly to B.C. to be at home and with my partner of 25+ yrs. I’m not thrilled about this.

My only comment as someone who works for a large city and with face mask bylaw in effect for last few months and also all my siblings working in hospitals in Metro Toronto: emergency medicine doctor, hospital pharmacist, receptionist at pediatric ward and IT professional at Centre for Mental Health and Addictions where all facilities had /have covid, I can’t support those flagrantly violate masking, etc. and talk about taking away individual freedoms. This is temporary though it will probably go on for at least another year since vaccination is slow process.

It is really thinking about the community good as well self.

    Keep healthy, Marg.

    1. Hi Jean!
There is much more talk now that Herd Immunity will be achieved in two ways – through people getting the virus and through people getting the vaccine. At this time, it is not known whether the vaccine will stop transmission of the virus – it may only prevent people from getting sick from the virus.

Most people who have had Covid are thought to be immune, which seems to indicate they will not get it again and therefore won’t transmit it. It is possible, then, that there will be an advantage to having had the virus vs getting a vaccine. Time will tell!

We have been told that social distancing is the Best Option, and that masking is the alternative where social distancing is not possible. That has never changed. While I understand that fear causes some people to mask in situations where social distancing has been shown to be highly effective, one person’s fear does not give them the right to dictate how another person chooses to mask. That is the individual freedom that people do not want to give up!
